"I mean, I realize she works hard for the money," Stevie said as he stammered about with the scissors in his left hand. His nap in Carrie's lap lasted all of twenty minutes.
He looked back at Carrie. It was after all just the two of them in the livingroom. Somebody had to go to bed. "Think about it, Holly is so set in her ways." He shrugged. "But she means well."
"Right," Carrie agreed. "It's just I dunno if that's where I need to be. Maybe, maybe I can't be a hairstylist."
"Well, don't listen to them," he told her. "But like you said, maybe you could just get on at a nail salon right now. Maybe that's what you should do. And not worrying so much about what Holly wants you to do."
"Yeah, but getting the job is easier said than done." Carrie hugged herself as if the world was going on without her and what could she really do about it. She went to get him another cup of coffee. It was well after midnight now.
"You got that right," Stevie sighed. "Oh yeah, I completely forgot to tell you." He then smiled. "J and I made up."
"Sweet," Carrie smiled back.
"It's for real," he told her, but then sighed. "Just one hitch, the yogurt place is closing, so there go our jobs."
"Sorry," she did feel for him. "I'm not sure I've ever really had a job." Carrie then said.
"Oh, you work all the time," Stevie said. "You just need to get paid for it."
"I guess," she shrugged.
"You have a lot of skills. Maybe we should be working on a resume instead of trying to figure out this hair-cutting thing," Stevie said. He put down the scissors on the coffee table.
Carrie nursed her bottom lip. She didn't know where to start.
"Do you have a laptop?" He wanted to know. Carrie went to get it. It was in her backpack. She'd have to plug it in since the charge wasn't so great on it. Stevie helped her set up her pink laptop. He admired all her downloads of music. It was mostly K-Pop.
He asked if she'd ever got to see any of the bands she loved so much. Carrie shook her head, no.
"Well, who knows, maybe you'll work for a K-pop star someday," He got to a site where she would start a resume.
She tried not to laugh.
Stevie pulled up a chair from the dining table and sat next to her. "What's so funny?" Stevie asked. "It could happen. You, have to dream big."
Thankfully, he was here to help her through every step. It was as if he would show Holly that Carrie would do just fine without going back to Beauty school.
Very fine post 😊
ReplyDeleteTrue, you have to have dreams and you have to believe in them.
ReplyDeleteI love how supportive Stevie is of Carrie. I used to think that Holly's suggestion for Carrie to go back to beauty school was supportive too, but this angle makes me wonder. At the end of the day, Carrie has to do what's right for her. And it looks like she's on her way!
ReplyDeleteLove the "cats are connoisseurs of comfort" in the collage. :)
Great ending :)
ReplyDeleteI love this, I dream always with a drawing job, is very difficult too
