When nothing really goes to plan

 

Stevie said he'd be over early to help Carrie. It was the least he could do. He didn't want her to feel worn out before the dinner guests arrived. So there he was a little before three. However, Holly was not amused.

"What do you want to do?" She scowled. "Move furniture around?" Naturally, she sashayed away as if she leave it all to him. After all, it would take her a while to get ready.

"Just what is she getting ready for?" Stevie wanted to know as he helped wash veg and peeled potatoes for Carrie.

"Oh, it's that Liam. Maybe she's trying to impress him. I dunno." Carrie shrugged back as she was busy with the roast beef stew. The potatoes were the last thing they needed. The stew smelled divine. It had been cooking in red wine most of the day. She'd made homemade rolls. And of course, there were a lot of crunchy things to eat on the veggie tray.

"But..but what about you and Holly?" Stevie couldn't help but ask.

"Let's just call it a one-off and forget it, OK?" Carrie gave him a look that it was THE END.

Stevie gave her a nod. "You deserve someone who's going to cherish every little you do."

Carrie only smile back but assured him she wasn't getting her hopes up. After all, it was pretty shitty she said having to stay with such a so-called friend who really didn't want her around.

"Oh, she does, she just doesn't know how to show it," Stevie told her. "Just don't give up on Holly."

"If you say so," but Carrie had a stiffer-upper lip about it. She went on with her prep work.

Stevie opened the fridge and saw the strawberry cake. He smiled. 

"Oh, I hope someone adores you soon," Stevie smiled. Really, Carrie deserved the best.
