"Hold up, wait a minute." Those words gave Stevie such anguish. What could be wrong now?
They'd been at each other for way over an hour and the kissing hadn't stopped. They were getting good at this. The groove, the knowing of each other. It was electric. Or so it had been on Holly's couch.
"What's wrong?" Weren't they about to do something? Like...in bed. They were still on the couch but everything was unbuttoned and shirts on the floor.
J looked very solemn as if he'd been in thought all this time while Stevie had outdone himself in the touchy-feely department. He knew what J wanted. What was the problem?
"I don't want to be compared to that ..that other guy."
"Oh." Was that all?
J pushed him off and went straight for the pizza, devouring the whole box in practically one go. Stevie winced with a sigh. He'd planned to have that for breakfast and dinner. He gritted a smile. But he had no idea how to keep J here.
Honestly, where could he start?
"Look, you're not Tim. You're not anything like him." He gave J a dead stare. But still, Stevie wanted to cry. He didn't want to think about his old friend. He didn't even know where Tim might be. It frightened him a little. "He..he's a pothead." Of course, Stevie was too. He did it a lot at school. Maybe..maybe Tim was some sort of ... Stevie cleared his throat. Honestly, he didn't want to say bad things about Tim. Especially, if he wasn't here to defend himself. He shook the thought that his old friend might have been a drug dealer.
"We..were just friends." Stevie could imagine that. "I mean, I was seeing this girl Molly back then." He tried to smile. Of course, it never worked out with Molly even..even if Tim tried to show him some moves. Suddenly, Steve couldn't hold in his laugh. It was funny to think how it had all begun.
"What's so funny?" J snapped.
"It's nothing." But a chill went through Stevie. What if Tim wanted to clean up his act? And he thought....Tim thought Stevie was the reason for what he'd become.
Stevie closed his eyes and the tears came, but J had already left.

Great story 😊
ReplyDeleteThere's nothing like the ghost of an old love to pour cold water on a hot new hookup. But J's not wanting to be compared to Stevie's old flame is clearly a segue to Stevie's unresolved issues. In other words, I smell an intriguing story. And I'm sure, in time, you'll tell us!
