just a little matter

Holly grew restless. It was impossible to sit through a marathon of GILMORE GIRLS with Carrie. Of course, there were plenty of snacks. But  Holly didn't need snacks.

She needed stimulation, of some kind. But there was Carrie eating popcorn and a cherry sucker in her mouth. It practically made Holly cringe. How could she possibly do that? Finally, Holly stood up and thought about telling her sweet little friend that she needed to go to the bathroom and just sneak out the bathroom window.

Of course, Holly wasn't as young as she used to be. She'd hate to get stuck nor have Carrie worry about what was going on with her in the bathroom.

"What's wrong?" Carrie looked up at her as if Holly was in some sort of trouble before it ever happened.

"I..I just remembered something."

"But..but it's already past ten." Carrie looked at her puzzled as if in no way would she venture into the dark.

"I just need something from the store. I'll be right back." Holly said all matter of fact, but she knew where she was going. To Sal's, she needed to unwind.

Carrie nodded and pushed more popcorn in her mouth. "I'll be up." She said she'd leave the front door unlocked.

"Thanks, baby." Holly smiled as if the rush was on. She needed a fresh hook-up of some kind. Hopefully, she'd find someone new.

Carrie kept smiling. Holly waved goodbye as if this would not take long at all.

Boy, was she wrong. Damn, if the drinks at Sal's didn't cost a fortune. Holly would have been better off if she'd gone to the grocery store and bought a bottle of Vodka.  And so many old-timers. They looked like hell. What was happening?

"Bring me another juice with vodka," Holly was already on her fourth drink. At this rate, she could drink them out of business in the dark limelight. Somehow she felt sexier in the dark. Now if somebody would just find her.

She thought of Carrie's smile. Why in the world had she even gone over there? It was crazy they'd met up at Joey's yogurt shop at the same moment over a month ago. Carrie was silly but said she was sure Holly would like the coffee flavor. And Holly did.

Carrie was all perky and fun, but she'd quit beauty school. She never said why. And now she wouldn't leave the house.

Maybe being Carrie's friend was a bad thing, Holly now thought. Could she be mental? Honestly, they had nothing in common. She always felt she was on some repeat of a Nic at Night show with her. The girl might as well be plastic. But she did do good work on her nails.

Suddenly, Holly felt sad about being her friend. She knew Carrie deserved better.

  9. I love the way you wrote Holly's thoughts about Carrie: "Holly stood up and thought about telling her sweet little friend that she needed to go to the bathroom and just sneak out the bathroom window." "She always felt she was on some repeat of a Nic at Night show with her." And then, of course, there's the whole beauty school dropout bit. I know there's something darker going on there, but you sure know how to weave in the humor. And I'm here for it!

  10. I really like how you focused on Holly's thoughts helping us to feel empathy for her. A few phrases really stuck with me:

"Somehow she felt sexier in the dark. Now if somebody would just find her."(ouch)
