A new day

Was it all a dream? Or was this really happening? Oddly, they found nothing to quarrel about, and maybe that made J the happiest. It was as if they were on the same page. And they would be one.

Lord knows it wasn't much of a romantic notion other than a big sleeping bag and some fluorescent lighting. No way could they have had a campfire on the roof. After all, they were each other's fire. And it left him laughing deep to the core. They were good for each other, and it was genuine and the touching, the kissing kept the night with passion until he woke up just before sunrise.

Oh, he expected Stevie to sleep through it, but finally he managed to see how beautiful the sun was from here. Like an orange ball in a citrus sky. That's when J told him the bad news.

"What?" Stevie set up, looking at him as if J pulled a dirty trick of some kind.

"It wasn't my call," he shrugged back sitting next to him just in his boxers. The yogurt place was closing.

"The building is shit, you know." J looked at Stevie.

"Are they going to demolish it?"

"Hell, if I know." But they only had one more week left. "We'll have to find new jobs."

"I don't want a new job," Stevie was out of sorts.

"Maybe they'll be better." Didn't Stevie remember they only made nine bucks an hour? Stevie never got more than twenty-five hours a week. At least, J practically managed the place. "We could look on Base. There's a food court at the BX. They are looking to hire."

"Oh, really." Stevie scooted his knees up and rested his chin in despair. J got a few energy drinks from his backpack and opened one to hand to Stevie who mentioned his mother worked at the child care center.

"I can't believe she's still there." Stevie shook his head.

"But it's a government job," J said. Stevie laughed at that as he took a sip.

"Let's just try to make the most of this week." Jay stroked Stevie's wind-blown hair. "You never know, we might be moving in together, some day."

"You make it sound like it's..so far away." Stevie nursed the sickening sweet drink.

"Look, I haven't told anybody else," J looked at Stevie out of the corner of his eyes. Finally, he guzzled down the drink. He'd forgotten to bring anything to eat. Maybe they could go to MacDonald's for breakfast.

  6. What a magical night! You do know how to set a scene with all the feels: "No way could they have had a campfire on the roof. After all, they were each other's fire. And it left him laughing deep to the core." When J said he had bad news, I was like, oh no, there's somebody else. So when he said that the yogurt shop was closing, I was relieved! I mean it's horrible, for sure, but not as horrible as trouble in paradise. I can't wait to see what happens next for too! And I love how you curated the collage in orange, evoking fire.
