Some friend you are

"OH MY GAWD," Holly couldn't help herself as she listened to Stevie over the phone. "Are you sure you guys are OK?" She wanted to come right over, but it was past midnight. Of course, she wasn't in bed and Carrie was doodling on her art pad, but she wouldn't let Holly see what she was doing.

Holly pressed her lips tight, thinking of all the bad things that had happened. That bartender was dead. Although, she couldn't find it anywhere in the newspaper. And when she did call about it, they made her feel she knew something she wasn't telling them. So she'd said never mind. No way did she want to get mixed up with something so vile. She'd hate to bring bad luck to her doorstep. After all, Carrie was already in her care.

"We're fine. Everything is fine," Stevie stressed.

"Yeah, right," she didn't believe that for a second. She sighed as if everything was going to hell in a hand basket just like Granny June said it would all those years ago when she was watching the nightly news with her.

"I wish you hadn't called," Stevie said he'd never mentioned it if she hadn't.

"Some friend, you are. Friends tell each other everything." She snapped.

"Oh really," Stevie bounced back. "What about your love life? Are you even smart enough to handle it?"

"Just leave me alone!" She clicked off. "That little shit." She tossed her phone on the other side of the couch and it almost bounce off.

"Who are you calling a little shit?" Carrie wanted to know as she looked over her art pad. To Holly, Carrie looked to be in the most uncomfortable position, but she'd stayed put on the couch as if it were her own private island. There she was barefoot in her pajamas.

"Stevie, that's who!"

"What did he do this time?" Carrie's eyes lit as if she wanted to know.

"The yogurt place got robbed, and his sweet big J froze." Holly hugged herself then.

"What would you have done in a situation like that?" Carrie pressed another question.

"Run." Holly winced a scowl as if wasn't that obvious.

"Yeah, you'd probably have gotten shot in the back of the head." Carrie remained straight-lipped as if maybe Holly wasn't nearly as sane as she thought she was.

  2. It's always interesting when Stevie and Holly connect . . . or don't, as Holly is quick to point out. The robbery is enough to make anyone prickly, though. On another note, I love this part: "To Holly, Carrie looked to be in the most uncomfortable position, but she'd stayed put on the couch as if it were her own private island. There she was barefoot in her pajamas." It seems so simple, Carrie just sitting and drawing, but the contrast between what Holly perceives to be Carrie's discomfort and Carrie's actual contentment speaks volumes.
